Si è svolta nella notte la cerimonia di premiazione della 78esima edizione dei Golden Globe, premi assegnati ogni anno da una novantina di giornalisti appartenenti alla Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Un'edizione particolare, dislocata per la prima volta tra il Beverly Hilton Hotel di Los Angeles e la Rainbow Room di New York e affidata alla co-conduzione a distanza di Amy Poehler e Tina Fey, con i candidati, come già successo con gli ultimi Emmy, collegati da remoto.
Rispettate le previsioni con Nomadland premiato come Miglior Film Drammatico e la sua autrice, Chloé Zhao, come Miglior Regista (premio che torna a una donna 43 anni dopo Barbra Streisand). Ad Aaron Sorkin va il premio per la Sceneggiatura con Il processo ai Chicago 7. Tra gli attori la spuntano Chadwick Boseman (Golden globe postumo per Rainey's Black Bottom), Rosamund Pike (I care a Lot), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat 2, premiato anche come Miglior Commedia), Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian) e Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday). Due globe per Soul che vince come Miglior Film d'Animazione e per la Miglior Colonna Sonora (di Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross e Jon Batiste).
Un premio arriva anche per l'Italia con Laura Pausini e la sua 'Io sì (Seen)', brano che accompagna il film La vita davanti a sé di Edoardo Ponti, con Sophia Loren (candidato anche come Miglior Film Straniero ma battuto da Minari di Lee Isaac Chung). «Grazie mille - ha detto l'artista romagnola - Non ho mai sognato di vincere un Golden Globe, non ci posso credere».
Sul fronte TV è trionfo per la quinta stagione di The Crown, che vince come Miglior Serie Drammatica e vede premiati tre dei suoi protagonisti: Emma Corrin per la sua interpretazione della principessa Diana, Josh O'Connor per quella del principe Carlo, e Gillian Anderson, perfetta nel calarsi nei panni della Lady di Ferro, Margaret Thatcher. All'acclamata La regina degli scacchi vanno invece i riconoscimenti come Miglior Miniserie e per la Migliore Attrice (Anya Taylor-Joy).
