La novità è l'interesse internazionale. In giuria a Cannes quest'anno, accanto a Sean Penn, Castellitto e Natalie Portman, è stata chiamata Alexandra Maria Lara, la protagonista di Un'altra giovinezza di Francis Ford Coppola, che ha appena girato con Ivory e Angelopoulos, e che vedremo nel film sulla banda Baader-Meinhof. Nata a Bucarest 29 anni fa, figlia d'arte, è cresciuta in Germania perché i suoi riuscirono a scappare dal Paese. In Romania ci è tornata proprio con Coppola che nel suo film ha voluto anche l'altra attrice di 4 mesi, 3 settimane e 2 giorni, Anamaria Marinca. La stessa che all'ultimo festival di Berlino è stata chiamata tra le otto Shooting Star, le promesse del cinema europeo. «La Romania», sostiene il regista, «è un Paese pieno di cultura, con attori e attrici di straordinario talento».

Alexandra Maria Lara, 28, doesn’t shrink from a challenge. Francis Ford Coppola has given her not one but three women of different cultures and eras to play in “Youth Without Youth” (Dec. 14). Based on a novella by the Romanian writer Mircea Eliade, the movie is a complex story of time travel, the transmigration of souls and the longing for eternal youth. Ms. Lara portrays the great love of an aging linguistics professor, Dominic (Tim Roth), and, as the film’s press notes have it, three variations on one migrating soul. Potentially this is the stuff of camp. (Charles Busch, are you listening?) But Ms. Lara never gets close, breathing such intelligent life into each of her overlapping characters that she keeps the movie grounded. She displays a similar command of character in the recently released film “Control,” bringing both passion and unexpected delicacy to the role of a model-chic music journalist who was the lover of Ian Curtis, the charismatic, suicidal and married lead singer of the post-punk Manchester band Joy Division. Two of the roles in “Youth Without Youth” are simple enough: Laura, a 19th-century university student whom Ms. Lara makes so gentle and warmly appealing that when she breaks off her engagement to the ambition-crazed young academic, you pity him; and Veronica, a vividly beautiful, exuberant young woman of the 1950s, who represents the time-traveling professor’s second chance. Veronica is glorious, but it’s when she’s struck by lightning and wakes up as Rupini, a seventh-century Hindu mystic, that Ms. Lara’s gifts are put to the test. Not only does Rupini huddle behind her mid-20th-century hospital-room nightstand, terrified and babbling in Sanskrit, but before long, under the professor’s care, she is regressing nightly through time and a series of ever more obscure languages, until she approaches the dawn of language itself. As she thrashes around, hissing and spitting in a wordless struggle, Ms. Lara isn’t absurd at all. Poised at the prehistoric interface of animal and human, she embodies nothing less than the agony of a being clawing its way into speech.

Alexandra Maria Lara è un’attrice nata in Romania e che ha studiato in Germania, figlia di Valentin Platareanu, un tempo importante attore teatrale e cinematografico in Romania. Fin dalla giovane età, era affascinata dalla recitazione, accompagnando sempre il padre al cinema, a teatro e alle lezioni di recitazione. Nel 1983, la famiglia si è trasferita in Germania e lei ha frequentato il liceo francese di Berlino, dove è entrata a far parte del gruppo teatrale. La Lara ha mostrato un talento e una maturità che andavano ben oltre i suoi anni, tanto che da adolescente aveva già interpretato ruoli più o meno importanti in diversi drammi per la televisione come Mensch, Pia!, Der Tunnel e Bubi-Scholz-Story.
