Il film si basa su fatti realmente accaduti. Tratta la storia di un giovane giornalista britannico di nome George Hogg che, in una Cina devastata dalla guerra, condusse sessanta orfani attraverso le montagne Liu Pan Shan, portandoli in salvo nell'antica città di Shandan.
