Its full title may be unwieldy and its humor a tad colorful for a family audience, but "Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days and 30 Nights -- Hollywood to the Heartland" is surprisingly endearing and chock-full of a genuine appreciation of the moment. The documentary, directed by Ari Sandel, chronicles the monthlong odyssey of Vaughn and four stand-up comedians he recruited from L.
It's a mouthful of a title for a rowdy, ramshackle funfest that flies by on its spirited humor and surprising heart. Back in 2005, Vince Vaughn mounted a comedy tour through what left-and-right coasters condescendingly call the flyover states. His friend Ahmed Ahmed, a standup comic of Egyptian descent, had introduced him to the acts of three friends at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
Late in “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins,” a comedy about a talk-show host (Martin Lawrence) revisiting his relatives down South, there’s a scene in which characters sit in the family patriarch’s living room playing video games. The extravagantly titled “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days and 30 Nights — Hollywood to the Heartland” imagines itself a contemporary equivalent of rootin’- tootin’ traveling entertainments like Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
