Il film segue uno fra i più rinomati importatori di tè nel mondo, David Lee Hoffman, nel suo viaggio in alcune fra le più remote regioni della Cina alla ricerca dei più raffinati tè prodotti a mano. Era dai tempi in cui Robert Fortune si era clandestinamente inoltrato in Cina nel 1843 per rubare piante e semi per l'impero britannico che un uomo occidentale non aveva tentato un viaggio di questo tipo per accedere al mondo nascosto del tè.
Like the drink whose virtues it describes, the documentary "All in This Tea" is brisk and agreeable, a handcrafted ode to the brew that is the beverage of choice where the Chinese, among many others, are concerned. An old Indian legend tells of how, after several years of intense meditation, the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma began to grow sleepy. His goal being spiritual awakening, this just wouldn’t do, so he removed his eyelids and flung them to the ground. From the spot where they landed grew the first tea leaves. This story is told in “All in This Tea,” which is, yes, a documentary about a beverage.
