Many of us have known someone like Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller), the prickly failure who is the hero of Noah Baumbach’s new movie, “Greenberg.” And many of us, with a sigh, have pulled away from him—not when he was young, perhaps, but certainly by the time he had turned thirty. The man in the movie, an intelligent neurotic, is forty. At first glance, he is too set in his ways to be anything more than a cranky cousin pepping up a family comedy, yet Baumbach and Stiller had the persistence and the imagination to find a soulful side to him, and the courage not to turn him into a lovable eccentric.
