Lewellen è una giovane e precoce ragazza che vive nelle campagne dell'Alabama degli anni Cinquanta. Suo padre è un personaggio molto duro, spesso violento sotto gli effetti dell'alcool, che maltratta in certe occasioni una misteriosa donna che si porta a casa saltuariamente, e che spesso poi fugge da lui. Malgrado questo Lewellen anela al suo affetto. Il talento e l'energia di Lewellen trova sfogo nella passione per la musica di Elvis Presley e nell'amicizia con Charles, che la consolerà a seguito di una delusione e le insegnerà a trovare nel blues la spinta per andare avanti.

IT was known as the “Dakota Fanning rape movie” at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. The press screening for “Hounddog” elicited actual boos, not to mention eviscerating reviews. Even before that, evangelical groups protested the film after someone involved in its early financing alleged publicly (and erroneously) that Ms. Fanning was naked in it.
