La storia di un giovane buono a nulla aristocratico contro un arrogante uomo di scienza. L'attrazione della manipolazione, un'amante narcisistica contro la vita della mente e le azione di principio. Il gioco d'azzardo, alcol e flirt consumati in un paesaggio incredibilmente bello sono delle attrazioni evidenti per Laevsky, che è cresciuto bruscamente quando è stato colpito da una rovina finanziaria e le schermaglie amorose sessuali della sua amante portare ad un epilogo violento.
Calling a film "Anton Chekhov's The Duel" underscores the Russian writer's pride of place as the prime mover in this expert literary adaptation. But if it weren't for the masterful work of director Dover Kosashvili, this rich, evocative film wouldn't have nearly the impact it does. The new film of Chekhov's “The Duel” was shot in Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast. As long as the action stays at sea level, the place makes a passable substitute for the Caucasian resort where the original tale is set—nagged by fits of fever and hysterics, and swathed in a summer heat that mocks the gentlemen's stiff collars and the ladies' corsets.
