The Birth of a Nation premiato dalla Giuria e dal pubblico

Il primo lungometraggio dell'attore Nate Parker ha convinto il più importante festival indipendente USA.

Come è successo negli ultimi anni, anche nel 2016 pubblico e critica hanno concordato. È The Birth of a Nation il miglior film del Sundance Film Festival 2016. Giudicato da molti un film straordinario, si tratta del lungometraggio d'esordio dell'attore Nate Parker: ambientato in Virginia nel 1831, il film racconta la storia di Nat Turner, uno schiavo istruito sfruttato dal suo padrone come predicatore per sottomettere gli schiavi ribelli. Dopo essere stato testimone di innumerevoli atrocità, l'uomo escogiterà un piano per condurre la sua gente alla libertà.
Tra gli altri premi, quello della giuria per la regia è andato a Daniel Scheinert e Daniel Kwan, per il loro Swiss Army Man, mentre Craig Robinson e Melanie Lynskey sono stati premiati come migliori attori rispettivamente in Morris From America e The Intervention.
Il riconoscimento del pubblico per il miglior documentario è andato a Sonita di Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, mentre quello del pubblico al drammatico Jim: The James Foley Story di Brian Oakes, sul giornalista americano decapitato pubblicamente dall'Isis.
