Celluloide
Paul Dano has always been an extraordinarily contained, even enigmatic young actor. In his award-winning performance in last year’s “Little Miss Sunshine,” as the gawky, goth big brother who takes a vow of silence, he was poignant, weird and lovable all at once. But he didn’t reveal his emotions openly; you had to guess at them from his body language and mobile face. Before that Mr. Dano, 23, was hardly idle. Since his standout performance in the 2001 “L. I. E.,” as an emotionally abandoned suburban teenager who falls under the sway of a predatory older man, he has contributed solid supporting work in nine feature films. But none of those roles allowed him to cut loose the way he does in “There Will Be Blood” (Dec. 26), Paul Thomas Anderson’s ambitious reworking of “Oil!,” Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel about the California oil rush. In the film Mr. Dano is pitted against Daniel Day-Lewis’s wily, explosive prospector, Daniel Plainview. Mr. Dano plays twins, one of whom Plainview pays for the right to explore his family’s oil-rich farmland. That character disappears from the story, making way for his more complicated brother, a preacher named Eli Sunday. Eli, not surprisingly, is hard to read. As the young charismatic leads his congregation into transports of religious ecstasy, Mr. Dano makes him just awkward enough to be both convincing and vulnerable. But the triumph of the performance is its ambiguity. When Eli tells the proudly godless oil man the role he expects to play in the celebration of his first well, you can’t tell if he’s doing the Lord’s work or has been infected by Plainview’s will to power. That question hovers over their escalating conflict, never more vividly than in a literally knock-down, drag-out scene in which Eli forces Plainview to profess his faith before the altar. Mr. Day-Lewis is an enigmatic actor too, which just makes watching him and Mr. Dano go at each other more thrilling.
