Diviso in tredici puntate più un epilogo, è la trasposizione, che segue quella del 1931 del regista Piel Jutzi, dal romanzo omonimo di Alfred Döblin. Franz, un ex carcerato, ha deciso di cambiar vita ma viene truffato dai suoi vecchi amici malviventi. Durante un difficile colpo infatti lo spingono fuori da un'auto in fuga e perderà un braccio. Non contenti gli uccideranno anche la ragazza. Ingiustamente accusato dell'omicidio, Franz riuscirà a scagionarsi.
