In Marco Bellocchio’s “Vincere,” the handsome young Benito Mussolini (Filippo Timi), a fiery Socialist years away from taking power, makes love to his mistress, Ida Dalser (Giovanna Mezzogiorno). As she becomes aroused, he doesn’t look at her, or even into her eyes to see a reflection of his own glory, but over her head. Later, he walks naked to a balcony and “sees” a vast crowd in an empty square below. That’s what he was thinking about all along. The sequence could be a grandiose variation on the old joke about the politician who wakes up feeling fine and can’t remember whether he had a good lay or a good crowd the night before. [...]
