«Un giorno capirai...», sono le parole dette da una madre al proprio figlio, parole enigmatiche, intessute di non detto, parole difficili da dimenticare. Per comprenderle, Victor dovrà ripercorrere la vita della donna che l'ha messo al mondo, dalla ragazza ebrea innamorata alla farmacista ferita che ha superato le difficoltà della guerra, imparando a conoscerla e scoprendo i fantasmi del suo passato. Attraverso i ricordi dolorosi che la donna, ormai malata, gli confida, Victor ricostruisce a poco a poco la storia dei nonni materni, ebrei francesi di origine russa, deportati e uccisi in un campo di concentramento. Con questo adattamento cinematografico del romanzo autobiografico di Jérôme Clément, attraverso il prisma e i meandri della memoria, sia essa collettiva o individuale, Gitai torna a riflettere sulla Storia e sull'importanza delle radici.
