IN the short story "3:10 to Yuma," written by a Detroit advertising copywriter named Elmore Leonard and published in Dime Western Magazine in 1953, an ordinary man takes on the extraordinarily dangerous job of escorting - all by his lonesome - a notorious outlaw to federal prison, and does it courageously and well. The story occupies a grand total of 15 pages in "The Complete Western 'Stories of Elmore Leonard" (2004), and what's striking about it is how little explanation Mr. Leonard feels compelled to offer for his hero's grit and competence, and how little too the reader misses it.
