Ambientato nei tardi anni '70, il film è un racconto dei pericoli del Sogno Americano visto attraverso lo sguardo innocente di un ragazzo quindicenne. Uno sguardo triste e divertente allo stesso tempo, a tratti addirittura violento e drammatico, al primo amore, alle dinamiche familiari e al divorzio in un momento di cambiamento per l'America.
Sometime late in “Lymelife” the director Derick Martini cuts to a close-up of a weeping teenager with a shot so tightly framed you can see the glistening curves of the tears clinging to the boy’s eyelashes. It’s an unexpectedly moving image, a reminder that the close-up, in its ability to bring us near to the poetry of the human face, remains one of cinema’s most potent if often squandered techniques. The setting is Long Island in 1979. Lyme disease is a threat to suburban families who don't need a deer tick to break down emotionally.
