Daniele, I read your review and it was quite beautiful and true I think but I just wanted to clarify my point as I believe you may have misunderstood me. My comment on the movie "that it was too sad" was not because I felt the director should change it in anyway. In fact the exact opposite. I appreciate the fact that the director did not try to make the film into a fairy tale...some sort of idealized world. I think the reason why the film remains so beautiful for me is that it touches upon a sad truth of human existence ...the unwillingness of people to reach outside of what they know. It is something I have seen too often in my travels. The fear of difference. I loved the line of the main character...your "tonto". While I do not remember it in Italian I recall it's english translation: "I do not like the word tolerance. To tolerate is to mean you do not view the other as your equal." To the mountain villagers this man and his family were not equals. They were always the "other". While the people of the town may have welcomed them into their home, they never welcomed them into their hearts. It is this that I found sad. But would i change the movie because of it? No. I would not. I would not change it because I think the movie is powerful as it is. It hits upon the tragedy of our times...that despite mass globalization and the ability to connect with people all over the world at the press of the button, we still have not learned the simple things. The things that are the most important. We have not learned to appreciate, or more importantly respect, the difference of others. And without that respect how can we really truly ever learn to love?
