Documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim puts the public school system through a withering exam.

In "Waiting for ' Superman' " a withering examination of the country's public school system, documentarian Davis Guggenheim, an Oscar winner for his incisive Al Gore-global warming treatise, "An Inconvenient Truth," proves as potent a storyteller and showman as activist filmmaker with a serious issue on his mind. Much of the film is told compellingly and heartbreakingly through the wide-eyed innocence of five children.
