To all our friends worldwide, new and old, welcome to the Pordenone Silent Film Festival’s “Limited Edition,” our 39th year as a festival and the first to be presented online. Although the decision to go virtual was taken out of necessity, we view this as an exciting opportunity to not only keep our audience together as a family but to embrace a new public. Rest assured, we remain committed to analogue screenings as often as possible, and we fervently believe that a film festival isn’t just a place to watch movies but to share that experience with others. These extraordinary times however demand an extraordinary level of adaptability, and we’ve partnered with mymovies.it to ensure the highest visual and audio quality.

None of this would be possible without our two most precious resources: the glorious, overworked and underfunded film archives of the world, and the amazing musicians whose passion and sensitivity render every viewing unique. When we were forced to set aside our usual thematic programming, our archivist colleagues stepped forward to offer rarely-seen treats that capture the full spectrum of the silent era’s cinematic wonders. And then when we contacted our family of musicians, they embraced the challenge and delivered exceptional accompaniments.

The eleven programmes we’re presenting this year reflect the riches of the art form comedies, dramas and travelogues from cinema’s baby steps to the full flowering of the medium. There are famous names like G.W. Pabst, Laurel and Hardy, Cecil B. DeMille, and Sessue Hayakawa, as well as filmmakers whom you may never have heard of before, but they all represent the best of cinema’s first three decades. Each day of the week and twice on the weekends we’ll post a new film programme available for 24 hours, ensuring the participation of viewers in all time zones. In addition to the films themselves, we’re delighted to be offering live streamed discussions after each programme, together with new special content like Master Classes with our musicians, and book presentations.

As a festival, we believe communities are best when they’re welcoming to all, and it’s with this in mind that we’re excited to be presenting this online edition. Whether you’re a regular attendee or someone with a vague interest in silent cinema looking to dabble, we’re thrilled to have you join us. We hope to see you in Pordenone next year in person, for the full immersion experience, sharing together the marvels of silent cinema.
