The son of an idealistic, Polish-Jewish communist called Regina, Bobby temporarily joined the mainstream, then embraced the margins with a ferocity even his mother had never dreamed of. Liz Garbus's documentary is well-researched and accessible; the only problem is that it's over so quickly. Bobby Fischer Against The World could be six times as long and still have you on the edge of your seat.
Naturally it helps that the youthful Fischer is such a physically arresting presence - a cross between Lurch from The Addams Family and Rumblefish-era Nicolas Cage. [...]
