A Simple Country Soul Pushed Past His Limits

A decorated Korean War veteran gone fishing in a rural arcadia, his trusty dog at his side: the tableau, a throwback to Saturday Evening Post covers by Norman Rockwell, could put a lump in your throat. When that image is first glimpsed near the beginning of “Red,” you expect the movie to be a bucolic tearjerker about an aging war hero and his memories, the comfort of pets and the pleasures of the simple life.
What you get is something else entirely. Under its Hallmark gloss, “Red” is certainly a throwback, though not to the 1950s; instead, it recalls the 1970s and the vigilante movies of Charles Bronson and the vengeful bloodbaths of Sam Peckinpah. [...]
