In "Hunger," the British video artist Steve McQueen has made an imposing feature-length movie that attempts to equal the discipline and fanaticism of his real-world subjects—Irish Republican fighters who, incarcerated in Maze prison, in Northern Ireland, went on a hunger strike in 1981, led by Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender). Ten of the men, after prolonged self-deprivation, died terrible deaths. The stated purpose of the strike—to force the British government to treat the men not as criminals but as political prisoners, with certain rights—was of less importance than the real purpose, which was to reignite the I.
