Another Soderbergh Puzzle!

“I JUST want to make sure you know it’s a comedy.”
Those were the words of a Warner Brothers publicist as I made my way this summer into a screening of “The Informant!,” the latest movie directed by Steven Soderbergh. It struck me at the time as an odd thing for her to say. If I didn’t know that the movie, which stars Matt Damon as an agribusiness executive turned F.B.I. snitch, was meant to be funny, wouldn’t that be clear soon enough? And anyway, I pride myself on a certain cinematic savvy. No one had to tell me beforehand that “District 9” was science fiction or that “The Hangover” was an earnest warning about the perils of binge drinking. [...]
