More epic than it needs to be and less profound than it should be, "Jolene" remains a watchable excursion into human frailty and foibles. Director Dan Ireland effectively juggles a wide palette of cinematic styles and tones in transferring E.L. Doctorow's short story, scripted by Dennis Yares, to film. Anchored by a chameleon-like, if slightly detached performance by pretty Jessica Chastain, this tale of a damaged young redhead who spends a decade looking for love in all the wrong places never hovers in one spot long enough to wear out its welcome, much like the title character herself.
