Le candidature per la 72a edizione dei Golden Globe Awards sono state da poco annunciate da Kate Beckinsale, Peter Kause, Peter Kause e dal vincitore del Golden Globe Jeremy Piven, affiancati dal presidente della Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Theo Kingma, dal produttore esecutivo Barry Adelman e da Miss Golden Globe, Greer Grammer. In diretta dal Beverly Hilton Hotel di Beverly Hills, le nomination per le 25 categorie sono state svelate in due blocchi.
Grande assente in queste nomination è Interstellar di Christopher Nolan. Selma, che era stato snobbato ai SAG, ottiene qui 4 nomination. Julianne Moore ottiene ben due nomination per Still Alice e Maps to the star. Ancora una volta Jennifer Aniston viene nominata per la sua interpretazione in Cake al posto di Marion Cotillard. Sorprende infine la decisione di inserire Big Eyes nella categoria commedia/musical, ma non è la prima volta che la Hollywood Foreign Press Association ci sorprende con le sue scelte.
La cerimonia i premiazione verrà presentata nuovamente dalle attrici comiche Tina Fey e Amy Poehler, per il terzo anno consecutivo, l'11 gennaio 2015 sulla NBC sempre dal Beverly Hilton Hotel di Beverly Hills. La trasmissione verrà vista in più di 192 paesi.
